Following a period of little activity since late 2011 due to members having other commitments, plus the passing away of one of our central figures, the group is now back together in force with a good turnout at this last meeting. Plans were made for Summer and Autumn 2012 campaigning. An earlier suggestion to exapand ouw Web presence onto social media sites is being implemented.
Situation across China regarding corruption
An item raised at this meeting was the increasing levels of frustration felt by people right across China and Tibet for the greed and corruption shown by Party officials and business interests. This has led to a series of public suicides by those worst affected. Some observers feel that this situation cannot continue indefinitely, and must either result in governmental reforms, or else in the replacment of the present Beijing government. More on this in a university talk planned for May.
2011 Collection Results:
Street Collections:
Tibet Support Group Grampian held a street collection in Inverurie on
Saturday 17 September at which £114 was raised, and a further one
in Aberdeen on Thursday 22 September yielding £217. This
money was rounded up to £350 and donated to the Tibet Relief Fund
to support the ‘Help on Hand’ project in Chandigarh, northern India.
Many Tibetans with life threatening illnesses travel thousands of miles
from Tibet, Nepal and all over India, for treatment at the hospital
there.
‘Help on Hand’ provides accommodation, transportation to and from the
hospital, help making appointments, interpreting between doctors and
patients, explaining special diets and medication, collecting
prescriptions, providing emotional support and arranging funerals as
and when necessary.
The Walk:
We have now collected all of the sponsorship money for our annual Tibet
Walk, and are delighted to have raised a total of £700. Very many
thanks to all of you who contributed to this – by walking, by getting
sponsorship or by donating. The money raised is, as always, split
equally between Free Tibet Campaign and the Tibet Foundation: For
political campaigning with FTC, and towards a charity project with the
Tibet Foundation. This year we are again supporting Tibet Foundation’s
Yushu Earthquake Appeal. The organization is aiming to raise £1m
for reconstruction in the area devastated in April 2010, with the
rebuilding of Yushu Tibetan hospital being the main priority. We have
now sent cheques for £350 to each organization.
Thanks to all who contributed.
